Before we ever packed our first umbrella hat or came up with quirky trip names, there was this adventure — a spontaneous, whirlwind tour through Grapevine, Dallas, and Fort Worth. Looking back, it was the kind of trip that helped shape what Umbrella Hat Travel would become: curious, a little weird, and always up for whatever.

Day 1: Roadtrip Fuel & Stockyard Feels

📅 Monday, October 30, 2023

We hit the road at sunrise — because road trips are just better with golden light and a playlist full of possibility. Our first mission: Buc-ee’s in Denton. If you know, you know. There’s something about beaver nuggets, quirky t-shirts, and endless snacks that sets the right tone for a Texas road trip.

By early afternoon, we checked into our home base in Grapevine, just minutes from Grapevine Mills. With our bags dropped off and energy levels recharged, we headed west to the Fort Worth Stockyards to catch the Longhorn cattle drive. Yes, it’s touristy — but it’s also authentically Texan and kind of magical in its own way.

As the sun dipped behind the skyline, we ended the evening at the Fort Worth Water Gardens. Tucked right in the middle of downtown, the Water Gardens are a serene, photogenic surprise. Quiet, otherworldly, and somehow calming despite the city surrounding you.

Day 2: Big Eyeballs, Big Feelings, and Bigger Art

📅 Tuesday, October 31, 2023

We started the day in downtown Dallas with a visit to the Giant Eyeball — a three-story tall sculpture that’s equal parts bizarre and iconic. From there, we slowed things down with a stop at Thanks-Giving Square. It's a small space with a big presence: spiral chapel, mosaic ceiling, and a sense of peace that sticks with you.

A short walk led us to Dealey Plaza, the site of JFK’s assassination. Standing there feels heavy — a necessary reminder of history that’s both sobering and surreal. Afterward, we took a breather with lunch in the park, letting the sounds of the city and a little sunshine bring us back to center.

That evening, we returned to Grapevine for an immersive deep-dive into the world of Meow Wolf: The Real Unreal. If you’ve never been to a Meow Wolf, just imagine stepping into a psychedelic dream fueled by art, storylines, and sensory overload in the best way. It was weird, wild, and completely unforgettable.

Day 3: Retro Joy & Wizarding Vibes

📅 Wednesday, November 1, 2023

On our last full day, we kicked things off in Dallas’s Bishop Arts District — a walkable neighborhood full of indie shops, murals, and really good coffee. The kind of place that makes you want to linger, window-shop, and pretend you live there.

From there, we headed north to Frisco and let our inner 90s kids take over at the National Videogame Museum. Between the retro arcade games, old-school consoles, and walls of pixelated history, it was nostalgia heaven — and yes, our competitive sides came out fast.

To wrap things up, we made our way to Little Elm for the Harry Potter: Forbidden Forest Experience. Wandering through glowing paths, casting spells, and spotting magical creatures under a clear Texas sky? It felt like stepping straight into the wizarding world. A perfect Halloween follow-up and a totally enchanting end to our trip.

Day 4: One Last Look Before We Go

📅 Thursday, November 2, 2023

We checked out of our hotel in Grapevine, already thinking about what we’d do next time. There’s something about that in-between moment — bags packed, keys in hand, but your mind still lingering in the places you just explored.

Final Thoughts

We didn’t have our signature umbrella hats yet, but this trip was already full of the things we now chase: odd landmarks, immersive art, retro joy, and those little places that spark your imagination. It wasn’t just a travel itinerary — it was the beginning of something.

A reminder that you don’t have to go far to find wonder. Sometimes, all it takes is a curious heart, a tank full of gas, and a few good stops along the way.
